Blade, chip, remote

Modern keys carry a chip. The car will turn over but not run unless the immobilizer recognizes that chip, which is why a hardware-store copy of a car key opens the door and then does nothing. A real replacement is cut to the lock and then programmed to the car, and programming is what separates a locksmith from a key-cutting kiosk.

The equipment exists in two places: the dealership's service bay, for its own brand, and the locksmith's vehicle, for most brands.

The cases for a locksmith

Lost every key: locksmith, because the car doesn't have to move. Need a spare: locksmith, because it's done at your door. Snapped key, remote that died, a key the ignition has started to refuse: locksmith. The common makes from the last two decades are all covered, and that's most of Cape Coral.

You'll be asked for the year, make and model, and on arrival for photo ID and proof of ownership. Neither is negotiable, and both are for your protection.

The dealer is right for the short list of cars whose makers keep key programming in-house, for brand-new models the tools don't cover yet, and for a key that broke while the car is under warranty. Once the paperwork is checked the work is mechanical: open the car, read the key data, cut the blade, program the chip, pair the remote, test everything twice. Ask for a spare while the equipment is already connected; it's the easiest time to make one.

Common claims, checked

Dealers only. Not true for the common makes. Locksmith keys fail later. No: same standard, tested on the spot. New keys mean a new ignition. Only if the ignition itself is damaged. Waiting is free. The tow and the days without a car say otherwise.
